This gallery travels through the villages photographed by Karl Forterre, mostly in France. In the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, near Pau, valley villages spread out beneath rocky peaks, sometimes in sunshine, sometimes in mist; in Buzy, a Romanesque church rises amid the greenery. In the Vosges, mountain villages huddle on their ridges, and another village nestles in the green hills of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté.
In the Loire Valley, a narrow street runs through the old village of Villandry, a bridge decked with pink geraniums crosses the river, and children cycle past a slate-roofed manor. Elsewhere, a man with a backpack walks down a narrow village street, a woman sits outside an ivy-covered old house with wooden shutters, a stone clock tower stands in the greenery in Mayenne, and flat-bottomed boats wait along a canal in the Marais Poitevin. Other views show a small village beyond a cornfield under a wide summer sky, sunbeams breaking through the clouds above a church spire, or an aqueduct and its village.
